Since 2022, the World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg), with support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been implementing the Taiwan-Asia Vegetable Initiative (TAsVI). The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between WorldVeg and ASEAN countries' genebanks, focusing on the protection, preservation, and sustainable utilization of crop genetic diversity to enhance agricultural resilience to climate change and promote sustainable agricultural development. During the project, WorldVeg established formal partnerships with genebanks in Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia, successfully regenerating over 2,200 valuable accessions that had been lost in their home countries. These accessions were returned to their respective countries to be used directly by local farmers or as breeding material to improve the climate resilience of the vegetable industry.
For decades, WorldVeg has focused on collecting, exchanging, and conserving important crop varieties, native plants, and endangered plant germplasm from ASEAN countries, storing them in the world's largest public vegetable germplasm bank in Tainan, Taiwan. Supported by the TAsVI project and the joint effort of Taiwan’s public and private sector partners, these rare accessions were successfully regenerated, ensuring their viability for planting and research in their home countries. Additionally, WorldVeg scientists continue to integrate advanced molecular marker analysis, phenomics study, and traditional field surveys to identify traits related to extreme weather tolerance and pest resistance, strengthening global agricultural climate adaptation and improving rural livelihoods.
These achievements showcase the best practices of Taiwan and ASEAN countries in protecting, preserving, and actively utilizing crop biodiversity to promote sustainable agricultural development. WorldVeg warmly invites all esteemed guests and partners to witness these remarkable outcomes.
