Prof. John Kellum
John A. Kellum, MD, FACP, MCCM John A. Kellum, MD, MCCM is Professor of Critical Care Medicine, Medicine, Bioengineering and Clinical and Translational Science, and Vice Chair for Research within the Department of Critical Care Medicine and Director of the Center for Critical Care Nephrology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Kellum received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1984. His postgraduate training includes an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester, NY, and a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Kellum is actively involved in education, research and administration. Dr. Kellum’s research interests span various aspects of Critical Care Medicine, but center in critical care nephrology, sepsis and multi-organ failure, and clinical epidemiology, including consensus development and research methodology. He has authored more than 250 publications and has won several awards for teaching. He lectures widely and has given more than 300 seminars and invited lectures worldwide related to his research.

Professor Jean-Louis Vincent teaches Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Brussels and is Consultant in the Department of Intensive Care at Erasme University Hospital in Brussels. He is a Past-President of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM), the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), the European Shock Society (ESS), the Belgian Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SIZ), and the International Sepsis Forum (ISF). He was a Council member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) from 2011-2013. He is member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine. He has signed more than 900 original articles, 400 book chapters and review articles, and has edited more than 100 books. He is the editor-in-chief of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care, and ICU Management & Practice and member of the editorial boards of about 30 other journals.

Dr. Chi-yuan Hsu is Professor and Chief of the Division of Nephrology at University of California, San Francisco. He is a graduate of Yale College, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his residency training at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital and his renal fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has particular interest in the epidemiology of acute kidney injury (AKI) and the bidirectional relation between AKI and chronic kidney disease (CKD). He has been an editorial board member for Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Kidney International, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and Kidney International Reports. He served as an Associate Editor for Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP) in 2004-6 for CKD and is currently an Associate Editor for JASN. His work has been cited more 23,000 time per Google Scholar.

Prof. Ravindra Mehta
Dr Mehta is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at University of California San Diego where he directs the UCSD Masters in Clinical Research Program. He is an internationally recognized expert in the field of acute kidney injury (AKI). He chairs the annual International CRRT Conference that is in its 23rd year in 2018. He is a founding member of the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) and the Acute Kidney Injury network (AKIN). His research has informed the development of the RIFLE and AKIN diagnostic and staging criteria for AKI and development of KDIGO guidelines for AKI. He has spearheaded several innovative multicenter studies including the CRRT vs IHD study, PICARD network studies on AKI and several international projects supported through the NIH funded UAB/UCSD O’Brien Center for AKI research that have provided new knowledge in the field.

Dr. Rajasekara Chakravarthi graduated from Mysore University (MBBS) in 1993 and completed MD (internal medicine) from the same university in 1996. Subsequently he trained as a fellow in Nephrology under the guidance of Dr.M.K.Mani between June 1997 to June 1999. He successfully completed the national board of examinations (Nephrology) DNB-NBE India. He worked as a consultant Nephrologist at JSS medical college and hospitals Mysore between Aug 1999 to Oct 2000 and then as a consultant Nephrologist at Apollo hospitals Chennai between Oct 2000 to March 2002. He shifted to the city of Hyderabad in March 2002 and started the department of Nephrology at CARE hospitals, the institute of medical sciences. He was the Head of the department of Nephrology CARE hospitals Banjara hills from March 2002 to September 2011. Since September 2011 till Sep 2015 he officiated as the Director Nephrology services CARE group of hospitals India which is a 16 hospitals group spread across the country. Since Sep 2015 till date he is the director of Nephrology services STAR hospitals, Hyderabad. India. He has keen interest in understanding Acute Kidney Injury and is a member of the AKIN and ADQI (2011, Dublin) (2016, Asiago). He has more than 60 publications in various national and international journals and more than 125 presentations in various conferences. He was a visiting and adjunct faculty to National Institute of Nutrition Hyderabad and JSS University Mysore. He is an organizing committee member and invited faculty for the international CRRT conference held at San Diego yearly since 2005 till date. He is a reviewer for the Indian Journal of nephrology, the official journal of the Indian society of Nephrology, Indian Heart Journal, Journal of Indian College of cardiology, Indian journal of Transplantation and Nephrology. He is presently nominated as a member AKI-committee of the International society of Nephrology. In the year 2016 he has organized and co-chaired the 17th ADQI held at Hyderabad India on Management of AKI in the developing world. He has been organizing AKI and CRRT conference since 2004 . The last one in 2016 was conducted at Novotel Hyderabad. He has been part of the active transplantation programme since 1997 at Apollo Hospitals - Chennai, JSS Medical College Hospital - Mysore, Care Group of Hospitals - India and presently at STAR Hospitals - Hyderabad, being part of more than 650 transplantations so far both live related and cadaveric. He is the founding trustee of the NGO, Care For Your Kidney Foundation (cfykf) started in the year 2015 with the aim of creating awareness in the public regarding kidney disease and preventing kidney disease in the community. So far the foundation has completed more than five thousands screening in the urban slums of Hyderabad. The foundation also subsidizes dialysis and kidney transplants for the needy population of the country. He is the founding director of Renown clinical services which is a group offering Nephrology services presently to five hospitals in the city of Hyderabad. An Annual meeting on AKI (acute kidney injury) and CRRT is conducted by Renown associates since 2016 namely Selections from Sandiego. This meeting provides training in all modalities of RRT (dialysis) in ICU and brings the highlights of the AKI and CRRT meeting held annually in Sandiego by CRRT Inc. and UCSD. This meeting held at Sandiego annually is into its 22nd year.

Dr. Chawla is currently on sabbatical as the Chief Medical Officer of La Jolla Pharmaceutical. Previously, Dr. Chawla was a Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University, where he had dual appointments in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and in the Department of Medicine, Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension. Dr. Chawla was also the Chief of the Division of Intensive Care Medicine at the Washington D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center. During his tenure at George Washington, Dr. Chawla was the designer and lead investigator of a pilot study called the ATHOS (Angiotensin II for the Treatment of High Output Shock) trial. Data from the ATHOS trial was published in the medical journal Critical Care during 2014 and demonstrated the utility of angiotensin II in patients with severe shock. These data were also used in support of the initiation of the AHTOS-3 Trial. Dr. Chawla is an internationally renowned expert in the field of acute kidney injury (AKI) and was an active investigator in the fields of inflammation and AKI, AKI biomarkers, AKI risk prediction, chronic kidney disease caused by AKI and AKI therapeutics. In addition, Dr. Chawla was an active investigator in shock, inflammation and extracorporeal therapies, including: continuous renal replacement therapy, dialysis and albumin dialysis. Dr. Chawla is also the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and was previously an Associate Editor for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Yung-Chang Chen, MD, is a professor and chairman of Department of Medicine at Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. He graduated from Taipei Medical University School of Medicine (June 1992). He trained in internal medicine at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Linkou Medical Center. He completed post-doctor research fellow training at University of Colorado Health Science Center in US (July 2002 to June 2004), researching acute kidney injury (AKI), liver cirrhosis with renal dysfunction and renal aquaporin water channels studies under the supervision of professor Schrier. His recent research activities include prognostic scoring systems in critical care and AKI biosignature for cardiorenal syndrome. Those projects are supported by grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology (Taiwan) and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Research Program.

Dr. Chiou is an Assistant Professor at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. He received his BSc and MD, from University of Pennsylvania and Tufts University, respectively. He completed his Internal Medicine residency in 2003 at Lahey Clinic, Boston USA, then returned to Taiwan with additional Fellowship training in Nephrology at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. In 2010, he returned to Boston where he joined the research teams under Dr. Kobzik (Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health) and Dr. Stossel (Translational Medicine Division, Brigham and Women’s Hospital), investigating the potential roles of plasma gelsolin in various clinical conditions, including pneumonia, sepsis, and chronic kidney disease. After returning to Taiwan in 2012, Dr. Chiou continued his research focusing on the roles of plasma gelsolin in patients with hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and acute kidney injury. He also served as the designated Nephrology Consultant for intensive care units in Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.

Kent Doi, M.D., Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the division of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at The University of Tokyo, Japan. He received his M.D. and Ph.D., and residency training at the University of Tokyo Hospital followed by research nephrology training at NIH/NIDDK (2005-2007). Professor Zoltan Endre graduated with first class honours in Medicine and Science and with a PhD from Sydney University. He trained as a Nephrologist at the Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney and completed post-doctoral studies as a Nuffield Medical Fellow in Oxford. He has held Nephrology and Professorial appointments in Brisbane-Australia, Christchurch-New Zealand and in Sydney-Australia. His clinical and research interests are in acute and chronic kidney disease. He is an international leader in kidney biomarker research and led the first intervention trial that used urinary biomarkers to triage to treatment in critical care patients. Dr Endre's laboratory currently analyses biomarkers of kidney disease for studies in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Sri Lanka. He is on the editorial boards of many Nephrology Journals including Kidney International and is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Internal Medicine Journal.

Patrick Honoré, graduated from Louvain Medical School as MD (1988), Specialist in Internal Medicine (1993), Intensive Care Specialist (1994) and Nephrologist (1995). During his internship, he completed more than 2 1/2 years specialisation in Nephrology and Dialysis. For almost 5 years, he received ICU training abroad (United Kingdom, Australia and USA). Pr Honoré is Board member of the Belgian Intensive Care Society and closely involved in the Nephrology section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. He is also a distinguished member or consultant of many scientific committees and decision-making organizations dedicated to diagnosis, treatment, and research in the field of acute kidney injury in the critically ill. Pr Honoré authored or co-authored more than 228 peer-reviewed papers, more than 600 abstracts and more than 75 book chapters. He was also editor of three books dedicated to Critical Care Nephrology. He has been invited as a speaker at more than 650 national and international conferences in almost 100 different countries. He acts as reviewer for more than 45 international journals, including top-ranking journals in the field of critical care medicine and nephrology. He is a member of the editorial board of several 25 high-standard journals. He is also Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Translational Internal Medicine (open access) since 2013, editor-in-chief of Journal of Translational Critical Care Medicine & Journal of Translational Kidney Research since 2015 (open access too).He is also appointed as section editor for Renal in Annals of Intensive Care starting from February 2016.Since 2009, he fulltime fulfils the position of Head of Clinics in the Intensive Care department of the University Hospital, Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) and became Clinical Tutor and Senior Lecturer at the VUB Faculty of Medicine. Since 2012, he fulfils the position of Full Professor at the VUB Faculty of Medicine. In the ICU department, he leads the Critical Care Nephrology Platform which incorporates intensivists, nephrologists and nurses dedicated to daily education, research and treatment of acute kidney injury. In particular, he directs and organizes continuous renal replacement therapy on a 24/24; 7/7 on-call basis. Ms. Ching-Chun Hsu is an RN in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at Taipei Veteran General Hospital and has held this position since 2000. She has become a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the MICU at Taipei Veteran General Hospital since 2016. Ms. Hsu received her Bachelor degree from Chang Gung University, and has previously pursued a Master degree at the Institute of Hospital and Health Care Administration at National Yang-Ming University. Her role in the MICU pertains to providing training to the incoming nursing staff, monitoring nursing care quality, and assisting physicians in their clinical duties. While her capabilities in the clinical setting have accrued wide recognition, Ms. Hsu has also actively participated in critical care nursing research. She is convinced that in addition to the possession of professional knowledge, the demonstration of care and empathy are vital in delivering optimal nursing care.

Her Nephrology experience includes all therapy modalities as well as the care of the acutely ill pediatric patient. Ms. Lischer consults nationally and internationally with medical professionals who are interested in initiating or enhancing a CRRT program. Dr. Michael Pinsky is a Professor of Critical Care Medicine (primary), Bioengineering, Cardiovascular Diseases, Clinical & Translational Science, and Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also Docteur Honoris Casusa at the Universite Rene Descartes Paris V, School of Medicine in Paris, France. Dr. Pinsky is currently an Emeritus (Honorary) Attending at UPMC as well as a faculty member of the Center for Critical Care Nephrology at Pitt.
Dr. Pinsky received his MD from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Dr. Pinsky completed his post-graduate internal medicine residency training and pulmonary fellowship training at Stanford University, Stanford, California; Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, Florida; and advanced physiological training at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes, Baltimore, Maryland.
Currently, Dr. Pinsky serves as the Principal Investigator of an R01 on “Using biological time series analysis to identify cardiorespiratory insufficiency,” and Co-Principal Investigator of an R01 on “Predicting patient instability noninvasively for nursing care (PPINNC).” He is also a Co-I on two other R-01s on subarachnoid hemorrhage and endothelial dysfunction during traumatic hemorrhage. He has been the Director of the Cardiopulmonary Research Laboratory for the past 34 years. Dr. Pinsky is the program director for an NIH National Research Service Award entitled "Experimental Therapeutics in Critical Illness" which he has directed for the last 19 years. He is also a part of the training faculty of the NIH grant, “Cardiovascular Bioengineering,” the Fogarty Foundation International Training Grant, “Enhancing research and informatics capacity for health information in Colombia (ENRICH),” and the NIH grant, “Anesthesia research training grant.”
Dr. Pinsky is the Editor-in-Chief of eMedicine’s Critical Care Medicine section. Dr. Pinsky is on the editorial boards of the Critical Care, Journal of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care, the International Journal of Critical Care, the Annals of Critical Care, and Intensive Care Medicine, Board of Reviewers. Dr. Qian's professional focus is on patient care, clinical/translational research and education in the area of renal tubular disorders. Dr. Selby studied medicine at the University of Nottingham, graduating in 1998, and after completing post-graduate training in the East Midlands was appointed a full-time NHS consultant nephrologist at the Royal Derby Hospital in 2009. In 2015 he was appointed Associate Professor of Nephrology at the University of Nottingham, based in the Centre for Kidney Research and Innovation (www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/renal), Royal Derby Hospital Postgraduate Medical School. Dr. Selby is a clinical academic with primary interests in Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the kidney and the haemodynamic consequences of dialysis. He led the development of one of the first e-alert systems for AKI in the UK and is CI on several investigator-instigated studies in these areas. Since 2011 Dr Selby has been awarded peer reviewed grant funding from MRC, the Health Foundation, Kidney Research UK and British Renal Society. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles. Dr Selby has several national AKI roles, including leadership of the AKI Clinical Study Group that sits within the UK Kidney Research Consortium, the co-chair of the UK Renal Imaging Network and programme board of the NHS England ‘Think Kidneys’ programme.

After completing his residency in Anesthesiology and subspecialty training of Critical Care Medicine in NTUH in 2006, he has received his PhD from the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University in 2012. His clinical and research interests include microcirculation, sepsis, blood purification, extracorporeal life support, therapeutic sedation and analgesia, and kidney transplant.

In clinical practice, both calcium-free and calcium-containing replacement solution have been used for RCA in CRRT. Nevertheless, using calcium-free replacement solution needs complex therapeutic modality and continuous intravenous calcium infusion. A simplified protocol for RCA using a commercial calcium-containing replacement solution, without a continuous calcium infusion, might be more efficient to be used in CRRT. We aim to design a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to compared the safety and efficacy between calcium-free and calcium-containing replacement solution in CRRT with RCA anticoagulation. Forty eight patients with AKI requiring CRRT and have no contraindications to RCA anticoagulation were included. The patients were treated with RCA-based post-dilution continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) and randomized to either calcium-containing (ionized calcium 1.50 mmol/L) or calcium-free (ionized calcium 0.00 mmol/L) replacement solution group. We measured the serum and effluent citrate concentration during CVVHDF at 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Primary endpoints were filter lifespan.

He has been a Nephrologist for over 15 years in several University Hospital in France (Lille, Paris, Nice) specializing in Nephrology and Dialysis. He gained his medical degree in 2004, specialising in anaesthesiology and intensive care, from the Claude Bernard University, Lyon, and subsequently completed a PhD on extracorporeal blood purification therapies in sepsis. Prof. Rimmelé is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed papers. In addition to blood purification for sepsis, Prof. Rimmelé’s academic interests include Acute Kidney Injury, Renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit, and simulation in healthcare as he is also the co-director of the simulation center at Lyon University.
